Welcome to ASDC
The African Schools’ Debating Championships is the premier youth dialogue event on the African continent. The Fourth Annual Championships will once again be hosted by St John's College, Johannesburg, from 21 – 28 August 2010. As always, the event is open to the public at no charge. ASDC continues to grow with more and more African nations, from Zimbabwe to Rwanda, competing for the title of continental champions! The successful inaugural tournament in 2007, and the equally successful 2008 and 2009 follow up tournaments are sure to set the stage for an ever bigger and more significant event this year.
The African Schools Debating Tournament also incorporates the National Debating Invitational, in which South Africa's top 16 debating schools (both government and independent schools) compete for the ASDC Schools' Cup!
Over and above debating, ASDC is more than just a competition. It is a platform from which young Africans are taught the skill of critical engagement: a quality central to the concept of leadership and pivotal to the advancement of African democracy. The tournament programme includes various opportunities for the debaters, adjudicators and the public to engage with a range of influential and insightful speakers. Previous prominent members of civic society that have engaged with ASDC include former President of South Africa Mr. Nelson Mandela, Governor of the Reserve Bank of South Africa, Mr. Tito Mboweni and Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Edwin Cameron, to name a few. ASDC aims for its participants, and for society as a whole, to question and engage these speakers and thereby, critically consider the opinions that they hold.
The African Schools Debating Championships is made possible by the generous sponsorship of FNB, Umsobomvu Youth Fund and St John's College.
